Achievements Unlocked: Just Cause (Part 1)

Over the past few weeks, I've been playing quite a bit of Just Cause. With only 4 achievements left to clear before completing 100% of the game, I figured I'd better get started on my Just Cause achievement guide. I'm not sure how many people out there are still playing Just Cause on the Xbox 360. Regardless, this guide's for you!

I've found that many of Just Cause's achievements are not very difficult to clear. With a little skill and a lot of patience, anybody could pull off 100% completion in the game. But it seems that not many Xbox 360 owners have the patience required to see this game through to the end. It's a shame: there are very few true sandbox games like Just Cause. In my mind, only Realtime Worlds' Crackdown does a better job of letting go crazy in a large game-world. And, of course, let's not forget the Grand Theft Auto series.

In any case, I'll post this achievement guide in parts. Just Cause offers 50 achievements worth a total of 1000 GamerPoint. There's lots to do and lots to see on the island of San Esperito. Hopefully this guide will help you enjoy them all!

Today, we'll be looking at the Stunt-related and Kill-related achievements.

20 Car-To-Car Stunts [5 GamerPoint]: Complete 20 Car-To-Car Jumps
This was the very first achievement that I cleared in Just Cause. It's quite easy to do. After your very first mission, make your way out to the nearby highway and commandeer a vehicle. Assuming you've managed to avoid getting any unwanted attention from police, drive your freshly acquired vehicle over to the side of the road. Now get yourself a second vehicle and park it beside the first. You're now ready to clear the 20 Car-To-Car Stunts achievement.

Get in one of your vehicles and press the appropriate button to jump to the roof of the car. You should now have an option to jump to the roof of the adjacent vehicle: press that button now! Here's the tricky part: keep pressing that same button to force Rico to jump back and forth from vehicle to vehicle 20 times. Achievement unlocked!

Before attempting to clear the next few vehicle-related stunts, be sure that you've acquired Rico's Grappling Gun. You'll get it on the second or third story mission. The story missions are dead easy so don't stress about it.

20 Sea Vehicle Stunts [10 GamerPoint]: Complete 20 Sea Vehicle Stunts

Get Rico out to the waterfront: you're on an island so this shouldn't be too tricky. You'll notice that there are a lot of boats out there on the water. Use your grappling gun to latch on to any of the passing sea vehicles. Once you're in the air, reel yourself in, jump to the boat, and commandeer it! You're now ready to perform 20 Sea Vehicle Stunts.

Here are the steps that you should follow:

  1. Bring the boat up to speed. You may need to experiment a little to find a speed that best suits you.
  2. Assume "stunt position".
  3. Deploy your parachute.
  4. As soon as you regain control of Rico, look down to spot your temporarily unmanned vessel. Use the left thumbstick to speed or slow your descent towards your vessel - do your best to position yourself above and slightly behind the boat.
  5. Watch the upper-left of your screen for the prompt to "Jump to Vehicle". If you find the boat pulling away from you, use your grappling gun to latch onto the vessel and start reeling yourself in until you see the "Jump to Vehicle" prompt.
  6. Now, press the appropriate button to jump to your boat.
  7. Hop back into the driver's seat.
  8. Continue repeating steps 1-7 until you've cleared the 20 Sea Vehicle Stunts achievements.
20 Air Vehicle Stunts [10 GamerPoint]: Complete 20 Air Vehicle Stunts
This achievement is incredibly easy to clear. Wander around until you hear a chopper overhead (e.g. "Alto! Stop! This is the police!"). Look up, target the chopper with your grappling gun, and reel yourself in. Assuming all goes well, you should see a prompt to "Jump to Vehicle". Excellent - you're ready to begin!
  1. Hit the "Jump to Vehicle" button. Rico will latch onto the tail end of the helicopter.
  2. Now deploy Rico's parachute.
  3. Upon deploying the parachute, you should see a prompt to "Jump to Vehicle" in the upper left-hand side of the screen. Jump back onto the helicopter immediately.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 until you've cleared the 20 Air Vehicle Stunts achievement. From start to finish, this achievement should take no longer than 2 minutes to clear (steps 2 and 3 take less than a couple seconds to complete).
20 Land Vehicle Stunts [10 GamerPoint]: Complete 20 Land Vehicle Stunts
This achievement is the easiest of all stunts to clear. Get Rico out to a highway. Grapple onto a car as it passes by and pull back on your left thumbstick until Rico's parachute deploys. Continue pulling back on the thumbstick to help Rico gain a little more altitude. Now start reeling yourself in towards the car. Once the option to "Jump to Vehicle" appears in the upper left-hand side of the screen, press the appropriate button to have Rico jump on top of the vehicle.

Repeat this process until you've cleared the 20 Land Vehicle Stunts achievement!

All Stunts Completed [50 GamerPoint]: Complete All Stunts

I checked on various forums regarding this achievment and read all sorts of strange and curiously erroneous information. Honestly, there is nothing tricky about picking up this achievement. Once you've cleared 20 Car-To-Car Stunts, 20 Sea Vehicle Stunts, 20 Air Vehicle Stunts, and 20 Land Vehicle Stunts achievements as outlined above, you'll be awarded the All Stunts Completed achievement. You should be able to pick up all 5 stunt achievements (worth 85 GamerPoint) within the first few hours of playing Just Cause, including the story missions required for Rico to acquire the grappling gun.

Now let's move on to the some of the more violent achievements...

100 Kills [10 GamerPoint]: Kill 100 Enemies
You'll likely get this within your first three hours of playing through Just Cause's story missions or side-missions. If you choose to clear the Stunt-related achievements first, it may take you five hours to pick up this first Kill-related achievement.

250 Kills [20 GamerPoint]: Kill 250 Enemies
As your proficiency with Just Cause grows, you'll find that you're able to take out more bad guys in less time. If you're looking to pick up 250 Kills quickly, look into liberating settlements or taking over Montano drug cartel locations. Both of these activities offer very little risk to Rico (if you avoid military base liberation missions) and offer the opportunity to kill a large number of enemies in the span of 2-3 minutes.

500 Kills [50 GamerPoint]: Kill 500 Enemies
If you focus on liberation or takeover missions, you should be able to rack up 500 kills within your first 10 hours or less of gameplay. The 100 Kills, 250 Kills, and 500 Kills achievements represent an easy 80 GamerPoint to help pad your gamerscore.

In my next Just Cause achievement post, I'll tackle the Collect Mission achievements, the Champion of Races achievements, and the Most Wanted achievements.

Have a good one!
