First Impressions: Borderlands

I try my best to put up my first impressions for most games that I play. These "first impressions" usually show up on this site within a day or two of my first couple of sessions with a new game. Last Friday, Borderlands arrived in my mailbox. And since then, I've done very little else in my spare time than play Borderlands. I've been playing so much that I haven't had time to write anything about the game.

In a nutshell? Borderlands is awesome!

I don't have enough time to really delve into this any further at the moment. I've got too much Borderlands to play. Here are some point form notes to tide you over until I have more time to properly digest and document the Borderlands experience:

  • Borderlands looks amazing! I love the art style. And while there are some issues with texture pop-in (on the PS3 version, at least), this only occurs immediately after the game's infrequent load screens.
  • Sound and atmosphere are incredible - especially in the Zombie Island DLC.
  • I've played two characters in the game:Mordecai (level 20 Hunter) and Roland (level 8 Soldier). The game plays similarly across these two characters with a few major differences that makes the experience quite fun and unpredictable.
  • If you like loot, Borderlands is the game for you!
  • Borderlands offers a lot of bang for your buck. Between the four classes, three full playthroughs per class required to really "finish" the game, and a whole slew of crazy in-game challenges, I'll likely not play any new games for quite a while.
  • Borderlands is dangerous to play late at night. It's very easy to lose track of time. 3 AM on a weeknight is pretty damned late (or early) to be playing a video game...but it's worth it!

I'll have more on Borderlands when I've got a bit more time to write. Until then, I've got some skags, bandits, and zombies to kill!

And if I get tired of massacring the bandits and anything else scavenging the wastelands, I can take a break from the gore and headshots to revisit the classic games. These are the times that I like to lay down my weapons and thinkbingo by clicking here!

Have a good one!
